Iyengar Method
Yoga in its broadest sense is one of the oldest systems of personal development in the world. It is a complete system for balancing the body, mind and spirit.
It was first systematized by a great Indian saint called Patanjali over two thousand years ago, and has continued to develop over the centuries by dedicated people who have lived their lives according to yogic principals and ideals.
B.K.S. Iyengar was born on December 14th 1918 in Karnataka, India. He was introduced to yoga by a renowned yogi, T.Krishnamacharya and started teaching in 1936. He was introduced to the west in 1954 by the violinist Yehudi Menuhin and with the publication of his book ‘Light on Yoga’ in 1966.
B.K.S. Iyengar is considered by many to be the world’s foremost exponent of yoga, having devoted his entire lifetime to its study and dissemination.
Guruji (as he is fondly known by his students) continued to practise well into his nineties until his sad demise in August 2014. He will continue to be a constant source of inspiration to his devoted teachers and students in this – his centre in Birmingham – as well as others worldwide for generations to come.
